Bellemoor School
Welcome to Upper Shirley High
Upper Shirley High is a coeducational school in the heart of the Upper Shirley geographical area of Southampton. New cluster arrangements ensure that the junior schools of Shirley and Hollybrook are the main primary links and recent developments have cemented existing collaboration between our schools, including the infant schools of Shirley, Hollybrook and Wordsworth, into something much stronger and concrete - the Upper Shirley Learning Community. Alongside the close partnerships with Tauntons College we now have dynamic progression from 'reception' through to post 16 for all children in our local area. Great Oaks Special School is also a member of the Learning Community. This is a really exciting time for all of us.

Durley Church of England Controlled Primary School
Background: Durley Primary School was founded in 1872 and is housed in a Victorian building with a modern extension. Half of the pupils come from the village of Durley and others from the surrounding area. The school is set in a rural location with a large playing field, two playgrounds and a small adventure playground. It prides itself on the teaching of English, maths, PE and PSE. A variety of extra-curricular activities are provided including choir, drama, football, netball, tag rugby, basketball, and in summer 'kwik cricket' and short tennis. Sporting successes include winning the Eastleigh and District netball shield in 1999 and the Eastleigh and District football tournament in 1998. This is seen as a 'remarkable achievement' for a school of 100 pupils. The school has strong links with the community and each year Parent-Teacher Association events are well attended. Pupils have raised money for charities including the Magpie Scanner Appeal, Animal Rescue Shelter and the British Heart Foundation.

Fair Oak Infant School
Fair Oak Infant School is a lively, innovative and successful four-form entry school
serving the villages of Fair Oak and Horton Heath. In January 2007 Ofsted said that
we provide an “outstanding quality of education” for our pupils.
The School has 12 bright, attractive teaching spaces plus a hall, library, ICT suite, music/drama room, cookery room & medical room. A conference room and three multi-purpose group rooms were completed in September 09. The school also has a central paved courtyard and Children’s World Garden which provide excellent outdoor teaching areas in addition to the attractive playground. The school is very well resourced.
Our curriculum is greatly enriched, broad and balanced: we have adopted the International Primary Curriculum to incorporate our international work and thinking skills and to reduce the overload in foundation subject objectives. There are many extra-curricular clubs run by staff and external providers, both during the lunch hour and after school.
Many things make our school unique. We have taught French in all year groups since 1992. We introduced peer massage five years ago. We also teach Philosophy for Children (P4C) with notable success. Our most outstanding feature is our commitment to the international dimension.
Fair Oak Infant School has continued to meet the Investors in People standards since 1997 and provides excellent opportunities for personal and professional development in line with the School’s Strategic Plan. As well as Investors in People, the school has gained two School Achievement Awards, the Basic Skills Quality Mark, the National Healthy Schools’ Standard, Silver Arts Mark, the Active Mark, the ICT Mark and the British Council’s International School Award (since 2005).
The staff are friendly, mutually supportive, hard-working and committed. They set themselves high standards and have high expectations of the children. They work well as individuals and as a team to provide very high levels of care and education for the children.
The children are lovely; friendly, keen to learn, caring and well behaved. They have a tremendous sense of pride in their school and are keen to contribute to its development.
Parents play a full and positive part in the life of the school and there is an active and successful Parent Staff Association. The school is also fortunate to have a very supportive Governing Body.
Fair Oak Infant School shares a site with Fair Oak Junior School and Wyvern College and is part of an active 7-strong Pyramid of Schools and Extended Schools cluster.
The school has a no-smoking policy and dress code.

Hollybrook Junior School
We would like to welcome you to our website. We hope that you find the information located here useful and informative and that you feel that it gives you a good picture of our school.
Hollybrook Junior School is a popular and successful school located near to the outdoor sports centre in Southampton. We pride ourselves on good standards of behaviour and high achievement. We aim to provide an environment in which pupils feel safe and secure so that they can achieve their very best as a result of receiving challenging and stimulating lessons.
We aim to develop the whole child and believe that the curriculum should be extended beyond the classroom. As a result we offer a range of extra curricular activities including football for boys and girls, karate, cross country running, skiing and multi sports. Our curriculum is also enriched by a block of swimming lessons for every class each year. All year groups undertake off site visits and there are residential visits in years 4, 5 and 6. There is also a very strong musical tradition at our school with a good number of pupils receiving instrumental tuition, a popular choir and an orchestra which is congratulated annually on its performances.
When we have asked our parents and pupils their views of the school they are overwhelmingly supportive and a testament to our long lasting links with pupils is the number who return to us in later years for work experience opportunities. Pupil voice is a strong feature of our school and the school council, led by the deputy head, is effective in bringing about school improvement and in supporting work in the local community.
Our school is a strong community and we are committed to providing learning opportunities for all.

Kings Copse Primary School
Welcome to Kings Copse Primary School. We are very proud of our school and the support it is able to give pupils, preparing them for life beyond a primary school and into their future adult lives. We have a responsibility to provide your child with the tools they are going to need in later life and to ensure that they are happy and confident individuals. 'Towards Lifelong Learning' is central to all we do at Kings Copse. We want our pupils to be successful and to be proud to share their achievements with others.
Our value added continues to be above national average with particular strengths in English and Science attainment. We support our more able, gifted and talented pupils well and this is reflected in their outcomes, with a high percentage achieving well above national expectations.
We moved into our new school building in September 2008. The school has state of the art 21st Century facilities, including a craft room, food technology room, air conditioned ICT suite, music and drama room and provision for up to 10 pupils with visual impairment. The provision for ICT is excellent, with a wireless network thoughout and use of laptops, as well as other media. Music is a growing strength, particularly instrumental tuition.
The new school has excellent landscaped outdoor play areas for all ages and provides space and improved facilities for community use. The pupils are already enjoying increased learning and play opportunities outside the classroom.
We work hard to make our school a happy and stimulating environment for the children in our care, a place where they can grow and be enriched. We provide a curriculum that will develop the essential skills in literacy and numeracy and also give children the opportunity to have other experiences within the framework of a broad curriculum.
We have strong relationships with our parents and we value their involvement and support throughout the years of their child’s education with us. Through hard work and enjoyment from many and varied opportunities during their time at Kings Copse, pupils grow and develop and we want them to be able to leave with many special memories of their time with us.

Ludlow Junior School
Dear Parent
The governors and staff would like to welcome you and your child to Ludlow Junior School. We hope this prospectus will tell you most of what you need to know about the way the school is organised and how we work.
Staff and governors at our school work very hard to ensure that everyone in the school community understands the importance of hard work, personal achievement and collective achievement. We aim to achieve the highest possible standards and we are proud of the excellent teamwork which provides every pupil with a stimulating learning environment. We also aim to ensure that every member of the school community feels supported and valued.
We are very proud of our school and its status in the community and we hope that you will want to become involved in the life of the school. We believe that parental involvement plays a major role in shaping the general atmosphere of the school and in helping it to achieve its aims for all pupils. We welcome all comments that you have about our work and try to build your views into our long term planning.
As parents, you are welcome to visit the school at any time, and there are also more formal
opportunities to meet staff and governors, for example open evenings and the annual parents and governors meeting, which are times to celebrate achievement and to discuss any issues.
If you are interested in becoming more involved in the school, why not become a member of the Friends of Ludlow Junior School, which raises funds for our school and which always welcomes new members? You can do this by contacting the school office. From time to time, there are vacancies for parent governors. If a vacancy arises we would be delighted if you put your name forward for election. If you wish to help us in a less formal way why not volunteer to support teachers in the classroom by listening to readers or helping with practical tasks.
We all hope your child will enjoy their time at Ludlow Junior School. We strongly believe that the positive ethos of the school is one in which your child will grow, develop and flourish.
Best wishes

Mansbridge Primary School
Welcome to Mansbridge Primary School.
We aim to provide our pupils with a positive and friendly environment within which learning can progress and high standards can be achieved in a natural but challenging way. We are very aware of our role in the centre of the Mansbridge Community. We also aim to extend the childrens’ vision beyond Mansbridge to the "Wider World Outside." I hope that this is apparent in the wide variety of opportunities on offer. Our relationship with parents is of great importance to us. I hope that you will always feel very much part of our school community, in partnership with all members of the school staff, for the benefit of your children. We do need to work together to raise the standard of our childrens’ achievements, particularly in Literacy. Mansbridge has always been a popular school offering much for the children of the local community. We do need the support of all in the community to raise the levels of achievement of all our pupils.

Mansel Park Primary School
Welcome to Mansel Park Primary School.
I do hope you find the contents of these pages informative. Our intention is to let you know more about the life and work of the school.
The staff of Mansel Park Primary School strive to create a quality learning environment in which each child will succeed academically, socially, physically and creatively. In order to achieve this we provide a curriculum which is both stimulating and motivating. The staff have high expectations and the children rise to them.
We are aware at Mansel Park Primary School of the vital role that parents play in the education of their children. School and parents are partners in education. To develop that partnership it is essential that our school develops strong links with parents and that parents develop strong links with school. To achieve this aim we involve parents in all aspects of school life.
Finally, we aim to make school an enjoyable experience for all children who attend Mansel Park Primary School. We are sure your child will enjoy their time with us.

As a parent of a child at this school you now belong to a community of parents, teachers and governors whose joint aim is to provide the best possible education for your child.
I hope that you have already had a chance to become familiar with our interesting school building and excellent grounds and will want to become even more involved with your child’s education at this school.
My staff and I put the interest of the children first and foremost in all our deliberations and considerations as we continuously strive towards developing a school which displays quality and aims for excellence in everything it does.
We hope that this will be evident to you not only in the quality of teaching and the breadth and balance of the curriculum we offer but also in the high expectations we have of ourselves and our pupils and the excellent results that we achieve.

Mason Moor Primary School
Mason Moor Primary is located in Millbrook, on the western edge of Southampton. It is easily accessible from both the city centre and the M27/M271 corridor.
We serve an estate comprising mainly local authority and housing association homes. We lie within the Outer Shirley Regeneration Area which is delivering funding and targeted support to address high socio-economic deprivation.
Our school was created in September 1994 by the amalgamation of the Wimpson First and Middle Schools. Subsequent extensive internal refurbishment has provided us with an attractive teaching, learning and working environment. Visitors often comment on the contrast between the bleak surroundings outside and the oasis created by the welcoming environment inside!
Nine classrooms for Years 1-6 are arranged on either side of two Central Areas. One of these is used to provide an Teaching Suite. The other is used as a mini Cookery Area.
Two small internal courtyards support practical role play and gardening activities. We also have a very large Hall with a stage and an adjacent Music Area.
There are extensive school grounds, including a Millennium Glade planted with the native saplings representing the names of each Class
We have a Resourced Unit for 10 pupils with statements for Moderate Learning Difficulties attached to the school. These pupils are allocated places by the Local Authority. We operate a highly inclusive approach and the children from Maple Class spend at least one session a day supported in a mainstream class.
Our school Library is sited at the heart of the school. It is very attractive and well stocked. A full-time Librarian Learning Support Assistant takes each class for weekly Library sessions to teach key skills and promote enjoyment of books.
Pupils with Special Educational Needs are well supported. Every class has an LSA for 20 hours per week. Their work is overseen by a Special Education Needs Coordinator. A wide range of intervention and ‘catch up’ programmes and strategies are used.
Emotional and behavioural support is also pro-actively managed, including direct support from two Emotional Literacy LSAs.
Teaching Staff
Our teaching staff is mixed in both age and length of teaching experience. They work and plan collaboratively, forming a haven of professional confidence and competence. Have a look at the staffing link to see whose who at Mason Moor.
Organisation of classes and the curriculum
Our pupils are currently organised into Early Years ( Yr R - Willow Class); Early Years and Year 1 (R/1 - Birch Class) Lower School (Yr 1 - Hornbeam Class, Yr 1/2 - Beech Class, Yr 2 - Holly Class), Middle School (Yr 3/4 - Sycamore Class; Yr 3/4 - Hawthorn Class) and Upper School (Yr 5 - Lime Class; Yr 5/6 - Plane Class; Yr 6 - Whitebeam).

Maytree Nursery & Infant School
We are an unusual school for the South of England, in that of our 262 children only four or five have English as their first language. But we still achieve results above the national average.
We have Pakistani, Indian, Bangladeshi, Somali, Polish, Afghani, Middle Eastern, Chinese, Turkish, Iranian, and Portuguese children here. Some families have been settled here for three generations, but many are newly arrived. In most years, half the children in our oldest classes have not been with us since the start of Nursery, but have joined the school more recently.
To be successful, we have to think carefully about teaching and learning. At the same time as providing the challenge needed by the highest achievers, we have to provide a suitable learning environment for children who arrive with no previous school experience, and no English.
Through careful assessment of children’s learning needs, and focussed teaching of groups, progress is maintained, and we now achieve SATs results at least equal to, and sometimes better than, the national average. We are really proud of this achievement.
At Maytree school you will see happy and co-operative children. They mix well together, learning from and appreciating their differences, and enjoying their similarities.
A large and dedicated staff work hard to ensure that Maytree children are given the foundations allowing them to become fulfilled, considerate, and responsible citizens.

Netley Abbey Infant School
Headteacher Welcome
Netley Abbey Infant School is a community school found in the beautiful Hamble Valley area to the east of Southampton in Hampshire. The historic village of Netley Abbey takes its name from an old abbey and was the site of the famous Royal Victoria Hospital - now a country park.
Originally opened in 1876 at Butlocks Heath, the school moved to the present building in 1984. The accommodation, after an extension, consists of 9 classroom areas, a computer suite, school hall, children’s kitchen and a library, and in January 2009 one of the classroom areas became the site of a fully integrated private pre-school - “Netley Abbey Pre-school.”
To ensure our children can keep active and enjoy the great outdoors, we have a large playground, climbing and play equipment, a science garden, a quiet wooded area and a covered all weather play area. We also have access to extensive playing fields situated next door on the Junior School site.
At Netley Abbey Infant School we believe all our children are unique and have different talents and gifts. We are developing our curriculum to ensure these gifts and talents are recognised, celebrated, developed and used to help the children learn.
We also believe that all children have the right to many things, ranging from “The right to a safe emotional environment,” to “The right to a good level of basic skills.” (The full set of children’s rights are shown on the opposite page.) As stated, we feel there needs to be a shared responsibility to ensure the children achieve these rights to a very high standard. This means that we work very closely with all members of our learning community, i.e. the children, parents, governors, the Junior School, local community groups and the local parish council to help them identify their responsibilities and roles in helping the children achieve our agreed set of rights.
We have tried to include all relevant information in this brochure, however, I am very happy for you to call and either ask further questions or book an appointment to talk to me or one of our wonderful staff.
We have also collected various quotes from the children and posted them in their relevent areas, remember to keep an eye out for them.
Kind regards

Shakespeare Infant School
Welcome to Shakespeare Infant School!
Dear Website Visitor,
Welcome to Shakespeare Infant School. Let me introduce myself - my name is Jane Skinner and I am very proud to be Headteacher of this school. I have been Headteacher here since 2002.
Shakespeare Infant School is officially graded as an outstanding school in Hampshire. I hope as you peruse the website you will get a flavour of what makes this school the special place it is.
Shakespeare Infant School opened in 1931 as the primary school of what was then a rural area. As the area developed we became an infant school in the 1970’s and Shakespeare Junior School was built on the same site.
From here most of our children attend Shakespeare Junior School and from there Crestwood College. These are both graded as good schools.
The facilities here are excellent. Our original building is full of character and charm and we have a purpose built wing for our three reception classes.
The grounds are magnificent. We have a very large field, plus a smaller field area, copses, orchard, nature and pond area as well as an outside role play area and adventure play-trail. What more could we want!!
We have four playground areas including a purpose built outside learning area for our youngest children.
Inside the building we have a separate library, hall, music and drama room, cookery room and lots of extra space to support small group and individual work.
We have nine classes at the moment-three in Year R (4 and 5 year old children), three in Year 1 (5 and 6 year old children) and three in year 2 (6 and 7 year old children). We currently have no mixed age classes. No class exceeds 30 children.
Children of all abilities do very well here. Our standards are very high. These include not only academic standards but also behaviour, presentation, manners as well as the learning environment.
We offer lots of extra curricular opportunities such as lunchtime and after school clubs. If needed before school and after school care can be provided.
We offer excellent support to children and families before they start here in and also when our oldest children move on to the junior school.
The whole school team are excellent. They are highly professional and committed to providing the very best learning opportunities for our children.
Everything we do is summed up by our logo We Care.
Enjoy our website.
With best wishes,
Mrs Jane Skinner

Shirley Warren Primary and Nursery School
Shirley Warren Primary and Nursery School
Attendance PolicyParents/carers have a duty in law (Education Act 1996) to ensure that children of statutory school age receive an appropriate education, “by attendance at school or otherwise.” For the great majority of children in Shirley Warren and Southampton this will involve regular attendance at school.
The achievement and maintenance of high standards in pupil attendance is the shared responsibility of parent/carers, Shirley Warren Primary and Nursery School and its Governing Body and the local education authority. It is through an active partnership that the best results will be achieved.
There is a clear correlation between regular attendance and achievement. As attendance deteriorates, so does performance and achievement. Further, poor attendance leads to social exclusion and, in some cases, to anti-social behaviour and crime.
The role of Shirley Warren School and the Local Authority (LA) is to support parents/carers to meet their responsibilities and, where necessary, to take action to enforce attendance. The school and the LA also have a responsibility to support pupils’ attendance at school by providing the best possible quality education and to provide advice and support to those pupils, and their parents/carers, who have difficulty in maintaining a satisfactory level of attendance.
The work of the Education Welfare Service (EWS) is central to raising standards of attendance across the city as a whole and within individual schools. Education Welfare Officers (EWO’S) on occasion work in school with pupils and their parent/carers who need support to improve attendance. The service also has a wider role in providing support to pupils and families linking them or referring them to other statutory and voluntary agencies that can help. The work of the Education Welfare Service is regulated on an agreed basis of policies and procedures that are outlined in the EWS Manual of Professional Practices that can be found in all schools.
In addition to the EWS, many schools employ staff directly to support their work to improve attendance. We are committed to supporting all those staff whose work can improve attendance at school, provide advice, guidance and training, as well as practical help to identify and improve poor attendance.
Aims and Objectives
The LA and Shirley Warren Primary and Nursery School aim to secure the full time attendance of every pupil.
Where full time attendance is not possible, absence may be authorised by the school based on information from a parent/carer who can account for legitimate absence of the pupil.
Where absence is not properly authorised, or a non-attendance is of concern, the school/LA will take swift and appropriate action to investigate and remedy the situation.
The LA will recognise issues for the broad range of ethnic and community groups in the city and takes account of them in its work.

Sholing Infant School
We warmly welcome you and your children to our school. We hope your visit to our website will tell you a little about our school and encourage you to come in and see us.
We are a small, happy school - we pride ourselves on our 'family atmosphere' and are committed to working in partnership with parents.
We were commended in our last Ofsted inspection (June 09) for our outstanding Care guidance and support of our pupils.
The quality of care guidance and support for pupils is excellent because of the high quality systems for monitoring wellbeing and progress, and the quality of staff and governance.
Our children make good progress and achieve excellent results, and all of the staff and governors fully support the school's motto 'Laying firm foundations' for pupils education.

St Mark's CoE Junior School
Our school was founded in 1884. We are a state Junior school for boys and girls and are maintained by Southampton City Council Education Authority. As a Church of England controlled school, the local church of St Mark's is represented on the governing body. We are fortunate to have strong links with the Diocese of Winchester and our local authority.
We are becoming a primary school in September 2010 and look forward to taking our first cohort of year Rs as we become a Forest School.
Our Vision, Mission and Values
THE VISION
We share and practice our vision together in our school…
All sections of school staff, governors, parents and children worked together to produce our Vision Statement. It represents the values, which we hold dear and which guide our activities on a daily basis.
Quality Education - We aim for the highest standards for all pupils and for the highest quality in all we do.
Care of Self - Everyone is taught to care for themselves. Our Personal, Social and Health (PSHE) curriculum includes teaching on keeping safe and keeping healthy.
Care of Others - This is strongly encouraged throughout the school together with the values of respect, tolerance and courtesy.
Care of the Environment - With our own wooded grounds, pond and re-cycling facilities we are well equipped to encourage respect and responsibility towards the environment.
THE MISSION STATEMENT
As a church school, we believe that to love God is to love our neighbour. If God is within us, we shall be good neighbours and show God’s love to the world.
Our school seeks to reflect the Christian understanding that all people are precious to God. Emphasis is placed on an education for life, developing each child’s particular talents within a happy, caring, and disciplined environment, where co-operation, mutual respect and responsibility are encouraged.
THE AIMS
Our school is a team, which includes children, parents, staff (teaching and non-teaching), governors and friends. Together we aim to create a happy community where we:
- Value and respect everyone, whatever their background andcircumstances
- Give everyone, regardless of race, gender and ability, an equal chance to succeed
- Raise self-esteem, through good relationships, high expectations and encouraging a positive attitude to life
- Provide a high quality education which:
- raises the standards of achievement for all
- balances learning in the core subjects with rich experiences of social, cultural, spiritual and moral education, the arts, music, sports and after-school opportunities
- values and builds upon the different aptitudes and talents of different children
-Promote awareness of right and wrong
-Expect high standards of behaviour, based on an understanding of caring for self and others.
-Zero tolerance of bullying.
-Develop a sense of responsibility for our community and the environment
We recognise that the keys to successful teamwork are participation and communication.
We strive to achieve excellence in all we do.

St Swithun's School
Headmistress' Welcome
Welcome to our website and thank you for your interest in St. Swithun's. This site has deliberately been kept as simple as possible. It is designed to give you a brief initial view of the School and a means by which to contact us for further information or to arrange a visit. I strongly believe that this is the best way to gain a true impression of St Swithun’s.
St Swithun’s is an all girls' school and many of our parents choose us because they believe in the benefits that this brings.
As you may well be aware, St. Swithun's has a reputation as a school with a high level of academic achievement. This is true, but it can also give the false impression that we select only the most academic girls and focus on the academic to the exclusion of all else. While our pupils are all of above average intelligence, they are by no means an academic elite and we aim to help every girl to achieve her full potential across the board in a sensible and sensitive manner.
Academic success is undeniably important, but it is only one facet of the rounded education that young people need to equip them for a successful and fulfilled adult life. A parent in a Good School's Guide said: "Girls go in here and with no particular song and dance seem to come out with incredible A-level results". They also, I believe, emerge as well-balanced, rounded individuals, confident in their own strengths and talents and ready to contribute to society in their adult lives.
Should you wish to visit St Swithun’s, please either e-mail us or telephone my PA, Mrs Hilary Turner, on 01962 835701. I should be delighted to meet you and to arrange for one of our Sixth Form girls to show you around the School. Alternatively, if you require any further information before arranging an appointment, please contact the Admissions Manager, Ms Angela Davies, on 01962 835700.

Tanners Brook Infant School
Tanners Brook is situated in a suburb on the Western side of Southampton, serving an area of residential and Local Authority housing. The school is increasingly drawing children from outside the catchment area as a result of its growing reputation. The school had a very successful Ofsted Inspection in 1998.
The children at Tanners Brook Infants represent a full range of ability, entering the school at a broadly average level, 70% scoring broadly average Baseline. Special Education Needs represent an average of 20 - 25%. We have a few ethnic minority children in school. We also have a unit for Hearing Impaired Children attached to the school.
Teachers' roles are defined and all staff have training opportunities identified. The Senior Management Team meets fortnightly and consists of the Headteacher, Deputy Headteacher, and three teachers with +1 responsibility points. We have an excellent Administration Team. Policies, Job Descriptions, Assessment, Planning and Schemes of Work are all in place. We have recently been awarded Investors in People. The Development Plan is working and procedures are in place to evaluate quality, standards and the needs of pupils.
All children are assessed on entry using Baseline Assessment. Our assessment timetable and class record files provide a detailed tracking profile for each child from Baseline to SAT's.
Staffing and Organisation
Currently we have three Year 2 classes, three Year 1 classes and three Reception classes. Each class benefits from a Learning Support Assistant. Year group teams plan together and, for some sessions, children are ability grouped across the year group. The Hearing Impaired Unit has 1 teacher of the deaf and 2 Learning Support Assistants.
There are regular staff meetings for all staff. Weekly meetings for teachers and support staff meet with the SENCO. All teachers hold responsibility for managing at least one curriculum area.

Curriculum and Pupil Development
Each subject manager has developed long and medium term planning based on QCA units of work and the literacy and numeracy strategies. The curriculum is monitored in various ways by subject managers, including work sampling, discussion of planning and record keeping, informal teaching 'swaps' with other year groups, and, in the case of Maths and English, regular termly assessments. The School Management Team regularly reviews the long term curriculum, planning and assessment, adjusting procedures to reflect the continued improvement in classroom practice.
We promote good values and self esteem through our positive Behaviour Policy. We have developed extra curricular activities (French, Dance and Gardening Clubs) involving outside provider teachers (for French), Learning Support Staff and parents. Each year the school participates in a charity fund raising event to enable children to focus on a variety of communities near and far who need assistance. These have included Red Nose Day, Jeans for Genes, Children in Need and Help the Aged.

Parent, Governors and Community Links
At Tanners Brook we have an excellent and supportive Board of Governors. They take their role seriously and undergo regular training. Each Governor is linked to a curriculum area and keeps the Governing Body informed of developments. Committees are set up and report back regularly. They have their own aims and action plans within the School Development Plan and regularly support the school events and training days.
We have good relationships with parents and encourage parents to help in many ways. In 1995 the Friends of Tanners Brook Infant School was formed. They are flourishing and have contributed towards the cost of the cloakroom/library conversion, new curtains for the dining room and hall and many smaller items. Our Book Fairs, Class Assemblies, Parents Open Evenings and social events are well supported. We encourage parents of children in Year R and in the Autumn term Year 1 to share a book or activity at the beginning of the school day and all children take home a boo

The Pilgrims' School
Welcome to the website of The Pilgrims' School, the choir school of Winchester Cathedral. In the pages that follow you will find something about the school's nature, aims and expectations.
Located in the heart of historic Winchester, less than one hour from London, The Pilgrims' School is a boarding and day school for boys aged 4-13. Like all the very best prep schools, The Pilgrims' School aims to educate its pupils well, to give them self-confidence and a delight in achievement. It aims at much more than this, however.
The Pilgrims' School is home to two professional choirs, the Winchester Cathedral Choristers and the Quiristers of the Winchester College chapel choir. In unique association with Winchester College, we have high academic standards and outstanding resources. As one of the major choir schools of the UK , The Pilgrims' School has many talented and budding musicians, Choristers and Quiristers aside, who inspire in all a love of music and the arts. As a church school, it has sound discipline and exceptional pastoral care. As a sporting school, it plays all the major games with almost daily rigour. High ambition, zeal and determination, an awareness of the worth of others, solid commitment, a deep faith; these are the fundamentals we try to instill.
Enjoy the site and do plan to pay us a visit and see for yourself what makes The Pilgrims' School, Winchester, a very special prep school.

Waterside Primary School
Waterside Primary School provides excellent opportunities for children aged 4 - 11. The school has strong links with the new Waterside Children’s Centre and Little Fishes at the Waterside Nursery on site, helping to provide continuity and progression in children’s learning.
When planning the organisation of classes, the priority of the Governing Body is to keep class sizes to approximately 30. The school caters for 172 pupils; organised into 7 classes. We have Teaching Assistants in each class who support children including those with special needs. Links
Liaison between the school and its on-site neighbours is regular and allows for development work in common. Primary school staff also visit other local playgroups.
Teachers are involved in collaborative meetings with members of staff from other schools at all levels, e.g. infant cluster groups, subject manager groups and leadership groups. We are developing collaboration with Hythe Primary school, our closest neighbour, sharing governor and TA training.
Most children from Waterside Primary School transfer to Noadswood Comprehensive School after Year 6 and liaison with secondary schools takes place at the point of transfer.

Winchester college
WelcomeWinchester College is a school for boys aged 13-18. It was founded in 1382 by William of Wykeham, Bishop of Winchester, together with New College in the University of Oxford.
Winchester exhibits an unbroken tradition of learning, a real enthusiasm for knowledge and a curiosity about the way our world works. We offer a distinctive curriculum and a wide range of cultural and physical opportunities. Although our matriculation results are excellent, preparation for them does not dominate a boy's time here. We strive to cultivate habits of disciplined organisation and clarity of thought, practical qualities necessary for a happy and creative life, together with a deep respect for the best that has been thought and said in the European cultural tradition.

Oasis Academy Lord's Hill
About Us
Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill is part of the Government's programme to provide up to 400 Academies in England and Wales over the next few years.
Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill replaced Millbrook Community School and Oaklands Community School which both closed in August 2008. From September 2008 Oasis Academy Lord’s Hill is using the exisiting buildings on the two sites of the predecessor schools and will transfer across to a purpose built and iconic new building on the ‘5 acre field’ site during the academic year beginning September 2012.
The Academy is sponsored by Oasis Community Learning, which is a separate charity, but is part of the Oasis global family. Oasis, a Christian organisation, was founded by Steve Chalke M.B.E. in 1985, and began its work in the UK but now delivers educational, healthcare and housing projects throughout the world.
Admissions
The Academy initially caters for approximately 950 students in the 11-16 age range. All places at the Academy are free and available to the local community within an admissions policy that mirrors the inclusive admissions arrangements for community schools in Southampton. At the time of the opening of the new building in 2011, the Academy will offer 5 forms of entry (5FE) – for a predicted 900 students 11-16.
Specialism
The specialist focus of the Academy is Arts with Business & Enterprise that builds on and augments the existing strengths of the predecessor schools and continues to develop its links to the wider community. With a focus on lifelong learning, each student’s education will be a careful and personalised balance between practical training and academic education. As an independent school, we employ innovative approaches to teaching and learning.
Our goal
The Academy’s goal is to create an environment where students 'want' to learn rather than 'have' to learn. State of the art computing facilities provide an essential tool to enhance teaching in the classroom and facilitates independent learning whilst the Academy’s study areas provide students with further autonomy in their learning.

The Gregg School
Set in over 20 acres of private landscaped grounds, The Gregg School is a co-educational independent day school with a roll of approximately 300. We are a caring and friendly school and our students, aged eleven to sixteen, are able to grow and learn with confidence. Exciting learning opportunities exist for children, with differing skills and abilities, who are encouraged to reach their full potential in small teaching groups taught by a well-qualified and conscientious staff. Students are able to participate in a full curriculum, a wide range of social, cultural and recreational activity, and a strong programme to stimulate personal development. In so doing they develop initiative, a sense of identity and the ability to work co-operatively in a challenging environment.
Among the many strengths to which the school's last inspection report (2005) referred were its excellent quality of personal relationships, the high proportion of good or very good teaching, the very good support provided for students with learning difficulties and the strong support of its parents. It was noted that the quality of the pastoral care contributed to the development of students' self-confidence promoting a climate of openness, trust and respect for others. Thus, the School continues to give a high priority to students' spiritual, moral and cultural development, and to the growth of social and communication skills. We are striving to move forward, focussing on key areas for development, including improvements to the grounds and buildings, increased emphasis on independent learning and enhanced provision of ICT across all areas of the curriculum.
The Gregg and St Winifred's Schools Trust is committed to safeguarding and promoting the welfare of children and young people and expects all staff and volunteers to share this commitment. It is also committed to opposing all forms of discrimination in ensuring that it provides equal opportunities in employment.

Thornden School
Thornden is an 11-16, mixed comprehensive school, which has 1410 pupils on roll. It has an outstanding record of examination success. In 2009, 97% of pupils aged 15 achieved 5 or more higher grades at C or above and 86% achieved 5 or more of the higher grades including English and Maths. Over the last 5 years, the percentage of pupils aged 15 achieving 5 or more higher grades has been over 90% every year. There are very few comprehensive schools in the entire country which can match this record. Different forms of value added analysis all show high performance. In 2009, our contextual value added score is 1027.9 which places us easily in the highest 10% of schools nationally for this value added measure.
Thornden is proud to be a comprehensive school which admits pupils of all abilities. We know, for example, that if you look beneath tables of results we have a number of individual success stories of pupils with modest levels of ability who required Special Needs help. In 2009, all pupils achieved 5 + A*-G grades and only 0.7% of grades were F or G. We take very seriously our first and fundamental aim, which is to "help all pupils to discover all their abilities and talents and to develop them in the most positive and constructive manner".
The June 2007 Ofsted Report made the following overall judgement in its first paragraph.
“My daughter absolutely loves Thornden and has thrived there. She genuinely loves school and looks forward to each day with enthusiasm”. The view of this parent illustrates the overwhelmingly positive view held by those involved with this outstanding school. The calm and supportive environment is sharply focused on developing a sense of self-worth in the students. As a result, the personal development and academic achievement of pupils, including those with learning difficulties and disabilities, are outstanding.
Thornden was judged to be Grade 1, outstanding, in every single area – a quite exceptional outcome.
In September 2000, Thornden became Hampshire’s first Arts College. We have mounted many initiatives in the performing arts for the benefit of pupils and the local community. A high quality hall for the Performing Arts with 400 seats, Thornden Hall, was completed in December 2002 after many years of planning and fundraising. We take our role as a specialist Arts College very seriously. We also remain firmly committed to maintaining our existing comprehensive admissions’ policy and continuing to offer a broad and balanced curriculum. In addition, in July 2004, Thornden was one of only 75 schools nationally to be offered the opportunity to be amongst the first schools to develop a second specialism. We decided to choose Science as our second specialism and a number of initiatives have since been developed in this area. We are pleased that the two contrasting specialisms provide a balance to our curriculum offering. It also means that we are now able to involve all of our other departments in a meaningful way in one or other of the specialisms. In particular, English is closely involved in the Arts specialism and Maths in the Science specialism.
As a result of our outstanding Ofsted judgement, we were categorised as a High Performing Specialist School and offered a further specialism. We opted to become a Leading Edge School and were awarded that status in April 2008 onwards. Leading Edge status and funding is allowing us –
1. To develop and share good practice within the school;
2. To develop partnerships with a limited number of other secondary schools to raise standards;
3. To develop links with a network of high performing schools in the Leading Edge programme.
Most recently, the Headteacher has been designated as a National Leader in Education and Thornden as a National Support School. The work we have begun with other schools is providing a new challenge to the school and is offering many professional development opportunities to colleagues.

Wildern School
Wildern School is a caring school committed to high standards of achievement. We closely monitor progress and offer challenges and opportunities to enable each individual to succeed. We value all pupils and celebrate their achievements.
Working in Partnership
We value our partnership with parents. We have an active Parent/Teacher association, the Wildern Society. Parent/Teacher Consultation Meetings are held at least once during a school year for each Year Group and the detailed annual reports are written for parents and pupils. We have established twice yearly parental focus groups to consult parents on the schools strategic priorities and procedures eg. homework. We also welcome contact throughout the year with parents as the need arises and we take the initiative ourselves to contact parents when we consider it necessary. Our Student Planner provides a day-to-day means of informal contact between teachers and parents. Using the Student Planner we hope we can react early to any matters of concern.
Liaison with parents is a most important responsibility of Year Staff and Group Tutors. They are the best people with whom to make initial contact. Curriculum Leaders may be appropriate for purely subject concerns. The Head is always willing to respond to enquiries.
We have two regular consultation meetings a year between the group tutor and the pupil at which their progress is discussed and targets set for future improvement. These meetings, called Pupil Action Planning meetings, take place twice a year for each year group.
We encourage pupils to take responsibility for their progress and achievements. Many pupils need no such encouragement, but for others we need to raise their expectations by supporting them to think clearly about their abilities and set targets for improvement. When under-achievement is identified through close monitoring we put in place strategies to help pupils meet targets and improve their performance.

Prospective Parents
Admissions Policy
Southampton City Council is the admissions authority for all Community Secondary schools and colleges.
First Preference
If the number of first preference applications received by the closing date is greater than the published admission limit, admissions will be decided on according to the following priorities:
1.Children with statements of special educational needs that name the school.
2.Children in public care (looked after children).
3.Children who live within the school's designated catchment area.
If the school is oversubscribed from within the catchment area, priorities 4 (i) to (v), as set out below, will be used.
4.Children who live outside the school's designated catchment area, in the following order:
i.children whose parents have named a particular school because the child has a significant medical or psychological condition which means they must attend the preferred school rather than any other. Applications must be supported by appropriate written evidence from a doctor or psychologist
ii.children who have a brother or sister already on the roll of the school who will continue to attend that school during the following year. (This includes children who live as siblings in the same family unit)
iii.children who live in the catchment area of a single sex school whose parents have specially stated their preference for a co-educational school
iv.children attending a designated catchment junior or primary school, namely Harefield Junior, Hightown Primary and Kanes Hill Primary Schools
v.children who live closest to the school based on the shortest practicable waling distance using public roads and footpaths. Distances are measured from home to school for in-catchment children and from either home to school or home to designated catchment area boundary for out-catchment children, as laid out in the individual school's admissions policy.
Should the school be oversubscribed from within an of the criteria 4 (i) to 4(iv) above, then distance, as given in 4 (v), must be used to prioritise applications.
Second Preference
If the school has places available after admitting all on-time first preference applications, any on-time second preference applications will be considered in accordance with the priorities set out above.
Third Preference
If the school has places available after admitting all on-time first and second preference applications, any on-time third preference applications will be considered in accordance with the priorities set out above.
Late Applications
If the school has places available after admitting all on-time applications, late applications will be considered in accordance with the priorities set out above. Late first preference applications will be considered first followed by late second preference applications and then late third preference applications.
If parents apply after the closing date for applications has passed, for example, because they have recently moved into the area, a place will be offered if one is available in the child's particular year group. The place will be offered in accordance with the priorities of the published admissions criteria.
Unplaced Children
Any child who remains unplaced after all of their preferences have been processed, either because they failed to get into any school requested or they did not complete a form, will be allocated a place at their catchment school, if places are still available. If there are no places available at their catchment school, they will be allocated a place at the nearest school with places available to their home address. Distance to the home address will be measured by public roads and footpaths.
Waiting Lists
If the preferred school is unable to offer a child a place, parents can request that their child's name be placed on a waiting list. If places become available, children on the waiting list will be offered them according to the priorities set out in the admissions policy. The length of time on the waiting list cannot be

Wyvern Technology Collage
Headteacher's Welcome
Alan NewtonIt gives me great pleasure to extend a ‘virtual’ but sincere and warm welcome to you, both to this website itself and to our college via this website. Whether you are a parent, a student, a neighbour, a friend of the college, a potential job applicant or an interested visitor, I hope that this window onto our college will prove helpful and informative and encourage you to find out more about our institution and our community.
Wyvern is a popular Technology and Humanities College which has rightfully earned its high standing and fine reputation in the Borough of Eastleigh and in Hampshire as a whole. It is a secondary college that distinguishes itself by providing a rich range of learning opportunities within a happy, safe and welcoming environment.
We pride ourselves on high standards and on getting the best out of everyone who studies and works in and for the college. Expectations are high, but this is coupled with a caring and supportive ethos which enables students to be aspirational, then to achieve and celebrate their ambitions and achievements and to be given a helping hand when necessary. We are proud of our specialist status but also of being a genuinely comprehensive school in which everyone has the opportunity to achieve or even exceed their personal potential. By looking after each individual, the success of the college as a whole largely looks after itself. As a result, together we share a dynamic and thriving learning community, with many dimensions and innumerable qualities.
In the 2007 OFSTED report, the following comments were made about the college:
"Wyvern Technology College is a good college with many outstanding features; it provides a good education for all its students."
"Standards by the end of Year 11 are well above average. This represents good progress overall and is a testimony to the very good work done by the college."
"Relationships between students and between students and staff are excellent."
"Students contribute particularly well to college life and to the wider community. They are offered many opportunities to accept responsibility."
"Students' outstanding personal development, including their spiritual, moral, social and cultural development, contributes strongly to their good academic achievement."
"Behaviour in lessons and around the college is excellent, reflecting what students say about how much they enjoy college life."
Investment in resources and buildings at Wyvern is high. Year after year, facilities and resources are improved and, while technology is a priority, we are committed to a broad and balanced curriculum which includes aiming for high achievement in English, Mathematics, Science, Languages, the Humanities, Sport and the Arts.
The staff at Wyvern is committed to excellence. Both teachers and support staff display an unrivalled dedication to the individual child, with both academic and pastoral issues taking equal priority. Our partnership with parents is extremely important to us and all communications between home and college are taken seriously.
This is only an introduction to Wyvern but I hope it inspires you to explore our College further and that it encourages you to become part of our successful community.
